Fishing with Gune

Meet Gune, one of the most iconic persons I have ever met. Gune lives in a small beach village on the South Coast of Sri Lanka. He makes a living with different types of fishing If he is not going out on a boat at 4 am in the morning, he is stilt fishing. Stilt fishing is an old custom in Sri Lanka. As you probably have seen on pictures, men in colourful sarongs sit on wooden poles and fish with a fishing rod. It makes a beautiful picture and the local fishermen are happy for you to take one in exchange for some Rupees. However, why not try it yourself and get your own stilt fishing photo. It is actually a very mind freeing and authentic experience and with Gune around you will feel very safe as he knows the ocean inside out. Only thing is, your bum might hurt after a while. But hey the beautiful picture in the end will be worth it. I did it a couple of times now and had a great fresh fish barbecue after at Gune's house. Just contact Hangtime Hostel for more information and they will be able to hook you up.
